The 2012 Pape was aged for 17 months in second to fourth-use French oak. The blend is a bit different this year. Castro said to me that the blend is usually 'Touriga Nacional from Outeiro vineyard and Baga from Pellada vineyard. As you know, Baga is difficult to reach the right maturation here in Dão, and so in those years we use another grape from the 50% that is not Touriga Nacional. In 2012 we have used Jaen and Pinot Noir instead of Baga.' Yep, that is a bit different. It is crisp and elegant, with a light and lively feel. The structure is a bit better than the fruit, but that structure is rather impressive. I'm not sure this will ever have the flesh and depth to reward long aging, but it is a ton of fun and it should hold reasonably well. It's a perfect and graceful food wine with some upside potential in the cellar. This is set for release on September 1, 2017.
