Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
One of two new wines in 2018 is the 2018 Os Bidueiros, named after the zone where the vines are located, a zone planted with 'bidueiros,' which is the Gallego word for birch trees. It's a village red blend from Seadur, which is within the Valdeorras appellation, but the wine does not carry it. It's Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Sumoll and other grapes from old head-pruned, 60+-year-old vines on granite soils at 500 meters in altitude. The old vines always have a field blend, but what's different here is that the third grape is Sumoll. Sumoll is a grape from Cataluña, not from Galicia, and I had never heard about it being planted in Galicia, so this is a first for me. It fermented with the full clusters and indigenous yeasts and had a long maceration of 860 days, then it matured in used 500-liter French oak barrels for 12 months. All the wines are floral and perfumed in 2018, but this one seems to have a slightly different perfume. The wines from Seadur are different from the ones from Viana do Bolo. This is slightly warmer (wet Mediterranean climate), all on granite soils, and the style of wines is a little darker, a little more serious, more structured and concentrated, perhaps here a little more Mediterranean (aromatic herbs). Could it be from the Sumoll? 2,000 bottles were filled in May 2020.
