Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I only tasted one vintage of the varietal that almost disappeared from Rioja, a grape known as Albillo Mayor in Ribera del Duero. I tasted the 2018 Torrontés, because frost decimated the 2017 and he only saved a few grapes to make the 5V white blend. 2018 was also a challenging year, when they suffered from hail, mildew and botrytis, so sorting and selecting was a must. This wine is produced with the grapes from individual vines spread among different vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, where the wine matured with the fine lees and bâtonnage for five months. Torrontés is the last variety to be harvested and behaves better in poor soils, not on gravel, and it's not very aromatic but has length on the palate and feels expansive and possibly with good aging potential. This is restrained rather than explosive. I think this is a bottle that can age. 1,116 bottles were filled in March 2019. I tasted a bottle of the 2016, and the palate was singing, vibrant, focused and chiseled. The nose had changed a little and showed that 2016 was clearly a riper vintage than 2018.
