Description
At the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, where Burgundy becomes more austere and wild, Vincent Girardin found in Maranges a terroir that spoke softly but with conviction. Vincent Girardin Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière, nestled on the stony slopes of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, encapsulates the restrained strength of a vineyard that has been forgotten for years. With 45-year-old vines and clay-limestone soils dotted with pebbles, Girardin saw an opportunity here: to reveal the depth of these discreet sites without resorting to artifice. His commitment to precision and minimal intervention is evident from the outset.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected in the field and on the table. Depending on the vintage, a percentage of whole bunches is added. After cold maceration, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with gentle pumping over and punching down. Pressing is pneumatic. Ageing lasts 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the same barrels. Before bottling - guided by the lunar calendar - the barrels are blended without fining and with a light filtration.
Taste
Deep ruby colour. On the nose, Vincent Girardin Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière displays aromas of ripe black cherry, damp earth, dried leaf and sweet spices such as clove and pink pepper. The wine breathes slowly, revealing hints of wilted violet and stony minerality. On the palate, firm structure with polished tannins, restrained black fruit and tension. Long finish, with smoky notes, faint salinity and fruity persistence. It is a serious Pinot Noir, without make-up, which faithfully reflects its origin. Ideal with spicy white meats, small game or cured cheeses. A wine that rewards patience and silence.
