Buy Wine from Bodegas Avelino Vegas
Bodegas Avelino Vegas is located in the small town of Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, in the province of Segovia, Spain. Founded in 1950 by Avelino Vegas, this family winery has experienced remarkable growth, thanks to the passion and dedication that has been passed down from generation to generation. The winery started with the production of wines using local grapes, especially the Verdejo variety, very characteristic of the Rueda Denomination of Origin.
Vineyards
The Avelino Vegas vineyards are spread over different areas with prestigious designations of origin, such as Ribera del Duero and Rueda. In Ribera del Duero, the vineyards are located between Peñafiel and Pesquera de Duero, a privileged region not only for its scenic beauty, with views of the castle of Peñafiel, but also for its ideal climatic and geographical conditions for vine growing. The soils in this area are mainly chalky and sandy, which favours natural water control and allows the vines, especially Tempranillo, to produce wines of extraordinary quality.
In the Rueda D.O., the vineyards are located on sandy and stony soils, which gives the Verdejo variety a special singularity. The climate of the area is another key factor, with strong temperature fluctuations that exceed 20°C during the summer. This temperature variation between day and night allows the grapes to develop a characteristic acidity and freshness, fundamental for the production of fresh and aromatic white wines. The winery also controls century-old, low-yielding vineyards, which guarantees a limited but high quality production.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas Avelino Vegas is based on a fusion between tradition and modernity. Since its beginnings, the winery has maintained a strong commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, but without neglecting technological innovations that allow it to improve both cultivation and winemaking processes. One of the mottos that define the winery's work is the passion for wine, something that is transmitted in every bottle.
In terms of winemaking techniques, Cristina Vegas, as head winemaker, has implemented a meticulous approach that combines inherited wisdom with the latest advances in biotechnology and modern oenology. This ensures that the wines not only reflect the character of the terroir, but also maintain the highest possible quality standards. The winery makes wines with a clear expression of the origin of the grapes, seeking to highlight the qualities of each variety and plot.
Among its most outstanding methods are controlled fermentations at low temperatures to preserve the fresh and fruity aromas in its white wines, such as Verdejo. In the red wines from Ribera del Duero, they use both French and American oak barrels, which allows them to achieve a balance between the structure of the wine and the ageing notes, without losing the fruit and freshness that characterise local varieties such as Tempranillo.
