Jean Pierre Robinot is one of the best known natural wine producers in France and even worldwide. His passion for the world of wine began in the 1970s, when he was only 20 years old.
In the 80's, Jean Pierre met Jules Chauvet and Marcel Lapierre, then founded one of the first bars dedicated to offer natural wines in Paris, the famous L'Ange Vin in Paris. In addition, Robinot is also one of the founders of the famed wine magazine Rouge et Blanc, which has become one of the most influential of its kind in France.
From theory to practice
In the year 2000, Jean Pierre Robinot made a life-changing decision. He realised that in order to understand natural wine, it was better for him to dedicate himself to producing it. So he sold his wine shop and bar and returned to his home in Chataignes, in the Sarthe, located in the Loire Valley.
He bought a plot of land on the outskirts of the village, which he called Les Vignes de l'Ange Vin, and thanks to the hard work he has done with his wife Noella, he has managed to turn it into 10 hectares of vineyards spread over different sites, some of them classified as Jasnières or Coteaux du Loir.
In his vineyards, viticulture is carried out in a natural way, respecting the soil and the natural cycles, without using herbicides or synthetic products. These plots of organically grown grapes are treated with infusions of different wild plants such as nettles and ferns.
The soil is chalky red clay with a high presence of silicon and the grape varieties Pineau d'Aunis, Chenin Blanc and Garnay are mainly grown. It is important to emphasize that Pineau d'Aunis is a local red grape which has the same taste as Pinot Noir, but a more spicy and herbal flavour.
Natural wines thanks to the biodynamic approach
The winery has an approach based on biodynamic principles. Spontaneous fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts. The fermentations are quite slow, in some cases they can last between two and four years, some even exceed five years.
The refinements are carried out in old, used barrels. These are located in the damp cellars of five cellars that he rents, which are old limestone caves that have been modified for this purpose and dug out of the hills surrounding his cellar. In these, the dozens of barrels are kept while the wine ferments. No maceration
The wines are bottled without filtering or fining. No sulphur dioxide is added, which is why the label bears the acronym S.A.I.N.S. (Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfie).
The most elegant wines of France
The wines of Jean Pierre Robinot's winery stand out for being very fine and elegant, besides their aroma and flavour are usually floral or fruity, and they are quite charming.
He works his wines in two lines, "L'Opera des Vins", which are wines made with grapes bought from local winegrowers, who also work under biodynamic methods, and "Domaine de L'Ange Vin", which are wines made with grapes grown in their own vineyards.
