Founded in 1901, the winery originated when a group of businessmen from Bilbao acquired the Sauvignon Frères firm and began a new era, marking its way towards becoming one of the oldest and most respected wineries in the region.
Currently, the winery is led by the oenologist and director Mayte Calvo de la Banda, a professional with a long career in the wine sector. Mayte has worked on important renovation projects in the facilities and is a firm advocate of interpreting wine from the vineyard, highlighting the importance of terroir and the quality of the grapes.
Vineyards
The winery owns 250 hectares of vineyards, making it the largest vineyard owner in Haro. This extension allows it to control the entire process from the vineyard to the bottle, ensuring quality at every stage. Bodegas Bilbaínas ' vineyards are spread over different estates, each with unique characteristics in terms of terroir and grape varieties.
The soils vary from deep sandy to silt loam and sandy-clay, depending on the estate. The Zaco and Vicuana estates stand out, which are influenced by their proximity to the Ebro River and are located at an average altitude of 445 metres. These estates produce Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Maturana grapes, resulting in high quality wines, with a round and deep profile, benefiting from the temperate climate with Atlantic and Mediterranean influences.
The Paceta estate, with 47 hectares, is particularly known for its sandy-clay loam soils, and stands out for its white varieties such as Viura and Malvasía, as well as Tempranillo. Bodegas Bilbaínas ' vineyards have an average age of 30 years, which contributes to the quality and complexity of the wines they produce.

Since its foundation, the winery has maintained a classic style, focusing on the production of Crianzas, Reservas and Gran Reservas. It has also been able to innovate and adapt to the times without losing its roots.
The winemaking technique follows a rigorous and careful process. The wines are aged for a minimum of one year in barrels, and the reserves require at least 15 months in barrels, followed by another year in the bottle. This practice allows us to develop wines with great structure, elegance and ageing potential. The selection of grapes is exhaustive, opting for the best plots and varieties that best express the character of the Rioja terroir.
In terms of innovation, the winery has been a pioneer in the creation of "high expression" wines, such as the La Vicalanda and Alto de la Caseta ranges, where modern winemaking techniques and French oak barrels are used to highlight the quality of its best grapes.
