Buy Wine from Vignobles Comtes Von Neipperg
Comtes Von Neipperg is a noble family of the Holy Roman Empire that since the 12th century had interest in vineyards and wine-making in the German region of Württemberg. In 1971, Joseph-Hubert Von Neipperg purchases four domaines in Saint Émilion: Canon La Gaffelière, La Mondotte, Clos de l'Oratoire and Château Peyreau.
In 1982, Stephan Von Neipperg and his wife Sigweis settled at Canon La Gaffelière after their marriage to take over the management of Vignobles Comtes Von Neipperg.
La Mondotte vineyard is placed at the east of Saint Émilion plateau between Château Troplong- Mondot and Tertre-Rôteboeuf. The soil here has clay and silt on limestone rock bed that supplies a distinctive mineral touch to wine. In the almost 4,5 hectares of vineyard the varieties planted are Merlot (75%) and Cabernet Franc (25%) with a 50 years old vines in average, so in good healthy harvests wines are regular and mature. Nowadays all the works at the vines are carried out following biodynamic principles and avoid the use of chemical products such as herbicide or pesticide. La Mondotte is proud of being one of the lowest performance plots in the whole Saint Émilion appellation, hardly 20 hectolitres per hectare and a total of 12.000 annual bottles of this treasured wine. Technically speaking and after a visit to the winery we cannot but conclude that wine making is quite modern as they look for compact, dense and powerful in structure wines with low performance and good maturity. How is this accomplished? Double selection table, whole harvest barrelling, pre-fermentative macerations and constant plunging of the cap during the alcoholic fermentation. Subsequently the ageing takes place in new French oak barrels for the following 18 months.
