The Frank Cornelissen winery is located in the northern valley of the active volcano Etna, in the eastern part of Sicily, in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia. This region, still undiscovered in 2001 when the winery was established, is nowadays considered as the main Etna area for single vineyard red wines(contrada), similar to the"Côtes-de-Nuits" in Burgundy or the"Barolo" in Piedmont. The total area of the estate is approximately 24 hectares.
Vineyards
The estate has 13 hectares of old vines in the classic Alberello (Gobelet) pruning system, 9 hectares of old vines transformed into modern rows of various widths, and approximately 2 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of olive trees. The rest of the area is made up of fruit trees, vegetables and shrubs. Although Etna has a tradition of high-density planting of vines, the estate seeks to reduce monoculture, interspersing several varieties of local fruit and keeping bees to restore a complex ecosystem. The new vineyards are planted without grafting, using a selection of their original ungrafted vines.
Philosophy
Frank Cornelissen's agricultural philosophy is based on the acceptance that man can never fully understand the complexity and interactions of nature. Rather than imposing themselves, they prefer to follow nature's guidance, avoiding all treatments on the land they farm, whether homeopathic, organic or biodynamic. Their aim is to avoid all treatments in the vineyard, the orchard and the surrounding area. The winery's products reflect this philosophy, and their most notable wines include Magma and MunJebel, which are single plot(cru) wines and olive oils from different vintages from exceptional terroirs between 600-1,000 metres altitude. In order to obtain deep territorial wines, grape yields are low, achieved by very short pruning in the dormant season of the vineyard. Harvesting takes place relatively late, aiming for perfect phenolic ripeness.
As for the authenticity of their products, from the 2016 vintage, their Grand Vin Magma started to incorporate an NFC chip on the label of each bottle, thus guaranteeing the authenticity of the wine and providing useful information about it.
