Buy Wine from Dominus Estate
Dominus Estate Winery is located in the heart of California's Napa Valley. Specifically, it sits on the Napanook Vineyard, which is located in a natural amphitheatre at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains on the west side of the Napa Valley. This vineyard has witnessed the rich winemaking history of the region, as it was here in 1838 that George Yount planted the first vines in the Napa Valley.
Christian Moueix discovered the Napanook vineyard in 1981 and immediately sensed that this land could produce a wine of unparalleled quality.
Vineyards
The Napanook vineyard covers 54 hectares, of which 41 hectares are currently planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soil of the vineyard is sandy clay and has a gentle slope of 3-10%, which ensures natural drainage. In addition, underground springs fed by winter rains provide a natural water supply to the vines, allowing them to develop deep roots.
Philosophy
Dominus Estate focuses on producing wines that reflect the purity, complexity and character of the grapes grown exclusively in the Napanook vineyard. They strive to be stewards of this historic ranch, creating ideal conditions for growing grapes by nurturing vibrant organic soil, encouraging natural flora and fauna, and proactively practicing dry farming. When it comes to winemaking, their approach is minimalist: they carefully hand-pick bunches, optically select the berries, and use gentle pumping over to delicately extract aromas, colour and tannins.
Christian Moueix has been a pioneer in the practice of adaptive viticulture. Since the 1970s, he has undertaken numerous innovative practices, including experimenting with organic farming, frost control using helicopters and the installation of vineyard drainage systems. In 1973, he began the practice of crop thinning, a method that has dramatically improved grape quality and has been adopted by vineyards around the world.
