Buy Wine from Bodegas Protos
In the heart of Peñafiel, a picturesque town in the province of Valladolid, lies Bodegas Protos, one of the most emblematic wineries in Ribera del Duero.
Its history begins in 1927, when a group of visionary winemakers decided to join forces to create a unique project. These pioneers, full of passion for the land and wine, gave birth to the first winery in Ribera del Duero, baptising it with the name Protos, which in Greek means "first". The vision was clear: to produce wines of the highest quality that would faithfully represent the character of the region. The legacy of these founders continues today under the direction of the current vigneron, whose commitment to excellence keeps the tradition alive, while embracing new techniques to elevate the quality of the wine. This master winemaker has a remarkable track record, having worked in some of the most internationally renowned wineries, which has allowed him to bring a renewed and rich perspective to Protos.
The landscape of Peñafiel, dominated by the majestic medieval castle that watches over it from above, is intertwined with the history of Protos. The original winery is located just below the castle, dug into the rock, forming a system of galleries that maintains an ideal temperature for the ageing of the wine. In addition, in 2008, Protos inaugurated a new, modern winery, designed by the prestigious British architect Richard Rogers, creating a bridge between tradition and modernity that symbolises the brand's philosophy.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Bodegas Protos extend over more than 1,400 hectares, spread between the Ribera del Duero and the Rueda Denomination of Origin. Each plot of these vineyards is a fundamental piece to understand the richness and complexity of Protos wines, being the fruit of decades of dedication and love for the land.
In Ribera del Duero, the terroir is marked by an extreme continental climate, with long, cold winters, hot, dry summers and a notable temperature oscillation between day and night. This allows the Tempranillo grape, the star variety of the region, to develop a unique aromatic complexity, with excellent tannin concentration and balanced acidity. The soil is mostly clay-limestone, with areas of sand and gravel that contribute to the structure and character of the wines.
On the other hand, the vineyards of Rueda are dedicated to the production of white wines, especially made with the Verdejo variety, typical of the area. The soils in Rueda are predominantly stony, rich in calcium and magnesium, which allows an excellent drainage and a homogeneous ripening of the grapes. The continental climate of this region brings freshness and vibrant acidity to Protos white wines, characterised by their herbaceous and fruity notes.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas Protos is based on the maxim of respecting the land and extracting from it the best it has to offer, always with an eye to the future. Every step in the winemaking process is designed to guarantee maximum quality, maintaining a balance between traditional techniques and innovation.
In winemaking, Protos is committed to controlled fermentation, using indigenous yeasts that respect the personality of the terroir. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in French and American oak barrels, which adds complexity and subtle notes of vanilla and toast to the red wines. In the case of the whites, the process includes a cold maceration to extract the freshest aromas and preserve the essence of the grape.
The leitmotiv of Bodegas Protos is clear: "To be faithful to our origin and to quality". This implies not only working with respect for nature, but also with a constant dedication to continuous improvement. Its wines, whether red or white, seek to convey the essence of the land they come from, offering the consumer an authentic and enriching experience.
Another aspect that defines Bodegas Protos is the impressive architecture of its new winery, designed by Richard Rogers. This building is an icon of modernity and sustainability, which at the same time respects and dialogues with the historical surroundings of Peñafiel. Its fan-shaped roof is reminiscent of the old warehouses in the area and allows for natural ventilation that helps to control the temperature inside. The winery has been designed to be functional and efficient, integrating advanced technology that facilitates the work of the winemaking team without losing sight of the artisanal nature of production.
The tour of the winery is an experience that connects the visitor to the wine-making process, from the arrival of the grapes to bottling. The original underground galleries, excavated under the castle of Peñafiel, are used for the ageing of some of the most special Protos wines, where silence and darkness provide the perfect conditions for ageing.
Bodegas Protos has become a benchmark not only for the quality of its wines, but also for its commitment to sustainability and local development. They actively work to reduce their environmental impact, using sustainable viticulture practices, optimising the use of water and minimising the use of phytosanitary treatments. They also collaborate with local winegrowers, fostering community development and preserving the Ribera del Duero and Rueda wine-growing landscape.
