The Panevino winery is located in Nurri, a jewel of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, about 80 km from Cagliari and on the edge of the mountainous but sea-viewing area of Ogliastra. Panevino is the passion project of Gianfranco Manca. Gianfranco, such an iconic and charismatic figure in the world of natural wine, calls himself"vignaiolo sulla terra", which means vigneron on the land.

This definition and its ambivalent nuances perfectly express the depth of vision and commitment of this unique vigneron and wine philosopher, a true craftsman/artist, capable of extracting the very soul of Sardinian grapes.From a young age, Gianfranco Manca devoted himself to baking, taking over his uncle's bakery and making the classic Sardinian breads he learned from his mother and aunts. His bread is still appreciated in his town and the bakery has been a success. Along with the bakery, some plots of land with very old vines had remained in the family despite having been neglected for years. These vines were formed by the alberello pruning system, traditionally used in the islands of Italy. Although they were mostly of the Cannonau variety, there were more than 30 different types of grapes planted. Gianfranco started making wine in the mid 1980s, but it was not until 2005 that he was ready to label it and offer his interpretation to the world.
Vineyards
Gianfranco works following a strict naturist ethic (beyond biodynamic) on about 6 hectares of old vines, mainly Cannonau, but with a wealth of more than 30 varieties, some of which are quite old and almost disappeared, such as Molletu, Muristellu, Alicante, Semidano, Nuragus, Vernaccia, Retallada, Vermentino and Tzaccaredda. These vineyards are located at a fairly high elevation of about 700 metres above sea level, in a terroir blessed with a variety of rich and diverse soils, such as clay, limestone and schist.
Philosophy
Gianfranco focuses on a deep connection with his vines. He claims to have a particular relationship with each vineyard and believes that the vines tell him what to do with the grapes. This connection is reflected in his wines, which change stylistically from year to year, meaning a new label and name for each vintage. Each new wine expresses his personal view of what he experienced that year. At the Panevino winery, no treatments, herbicides or pesticides are tolerated. Vinifications are made with natural yeasts from the vineyards. All wines are fermented in open wooden vats, then aged for 12 months in barrels at least three years old. The wines are bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphites. All wines are certified organic by the AIAB, an Italian organic certification board.
