Buy Wine from Valdeorras
The appellation of origin Valdeorras is located in the northeastern part of Spain where the vineyards extend along the basins of the rivers Sil, Xares and Bibei in the province of Orense. It is made up of the following wine-producing municipalities: A Rúa, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá and Vilamartín. The area is characterized by a continental Mediterranean microclimate with Atlantic influences, although less humid than in the rest of Galicia due to the distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Nevertheless, the sunshine, abundant rainfall and cold winters with risk of frosts stand out.
Valdeorras has been recognized as an appellation by ministerial order since 1945 and currently has around 3,000 hectares in production. The authorized red varieties are Mencía (main) together with Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Alicante, Tempranillo and Grao Negro. For the production of white wines, the autochthonous Godello (main variety), Doña Blanca and Palomino Fino are used, however the most singular Valdeorras whites are monovarietals of Godello.
In Valdeorras the vineyards are located on the slopes of the mountains as well as at the bottom of the valleys on slopes on a diversity of soils such as: shallow slate and schist where the wines are more aromatic and mineral; granitic and rich in sand where floral wines with a strong expression of terroir are obtained; boulders with clay on the surface allowing to obtain wines with good aging potential; and clay-ferrous which allows abundant harvests of good balance.
