Buy Wine from Ribeira Sacra
The Ribeira Sacra designation of origin covers the wine production area divided between the municipalities of Lugo and Orense, combing the valley of the river Sil and the middle course of the river Miño, and whose vineyards extend over 10 municipalities in the province of Lugo and 7 in the province of Orense. The approximately 1,250 hectares of vineyards are divided into five sub-areas: Amandi, Quiroga-Bibey, Chantada, Ribeiras do Sil and Ribeiras do Miño.
Since 1993 the regulations of Vinos de la Tierra were approved for the wines of Ribeira Sacra and it was not until 1996 that the change took place, with the approval of the denomination of origin that ensures the origin and quality of the wines. Wines that combine the Mediterranean landscape character with the Galician Atlantic influence, bringing freshness to the large doses of maturity.
Amandi, the Ribeira Sacra area that produces the best red wines
Amandi is without doubt the subzone of Ribeira Sacra that produces the most prestigious and quality singular red wines. The vineyard is located in an area of very rugged terrain in the canyon of the River Sil, with vines planted on hillsides and terraces of difficult access. The canyon originated in the Quaternary period caused by the movement of tectonic plates, leaving the valley split in two and bathed in the middle by the river Sil. A spectacular landscape reminiscent of the Colorado Canyon, but full of forests and vegetation.Among the vineyards planted on steep slopes at a 70% inclination, rosemary, lavender and sage emerge, which later are intermingled in the form of perfume with the fruity notes of the wine. The slate soils with iron minerals, micas and feldspar, are miserable soils suitable for the dry cultivation of the vine.
Different types of wines from Ribeira Sacra
The prevailing variety in Ribeira Sacra is Mencia, accompanied by the native red varieties Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha and Alicante Bouschet. For the white wines, the varieties Godello, Albariño and Treixadura are cultivated, and they are characterized by being white wines with a lot of finesse and green apple features and saline taste. We must not forget that Adega Algueira and Guímaro are the pioneering wineries that reproduce the most exquisite wines of the whole denomination, since their wines speak of terroir under an immeasurable balance.
