Buy Wine from Alvear
Bodega Alvear, founded in 1729 by Don Diego de Alvear y Escalera, is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Spain. Located in Montilla, in the province of Cordoba, this winery has been a pillar in the history of Spanish wine, remaining in the hands of the Alvear family for almost three centuries. Over the years, the bodega has been run by successive generations, reaching the current seventh and eighth generation.
Vineyards
Alvear' s vineyards extend over 150 hectares of property, with a further 200 hectares acquired from local growers. These vineyards are located in the Sierra de Montilla, an area renowned for its markedly calcareous soils, ideal for growing grapes. The Montilla-Moriles region, where Alvear is located, is distinguished by its extreme continental Mediterranean climate, characterised by intense sunlight and very high temperatures during the growing season. This climate is perfect for the Pedro Ximénez grape variety, the basis of Alvear wines, which is perfectly adapted to these conditions and can naturally reach an alcohol content of 15-16% in the vineyard.
Philosophy
Alvear' s philosophy focuses on making wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Sierra de Montilla. Using primarily the Pedro Ximénez grape, Alvear produces a wide range of wines, including finos, amontillados, olorosos, and its iconic sweet PX wines. The winery is especially known for the latter, considered among the best in the world in their style.
Alvear has innovated in the production of dry table wines aged under flor, as part of the "3 Miradas" project. This project focuses on producing wines that better communicate the region's unique terroir, using old cement vats and fermentation and ageing techniques under flor.
Today, Alvear also makes brandies, vinegars, vermouth and dry wines, maintaining a balance between innovation and tradition. The winery has been a pioneer in the production of sweet vintage Pedro Ximénez wines, being the first in Spain to launch a vintage PX.
The Alvear winery, with its rich history, its exceptional vineyards and its philosophy of respect for terroir and tradition, continues to be a benchmark in the world of wine, offering unique experiences through its wines.
