Buy Wine from Bodega Milsetentayseis
Bodega Milsetentayseis is located in the picturesque town of nebro, in the prestigious wine region of Ribera del Duero, Spain. This project is the second small venture of the Ruiz and Alma Carraovejas family, known for its innovative viticulture and commitment to quality. The winery is named after the altitude of its highest vineyard, located at 1,076 metres above sea level, one of the highest elevations in the region.
Vineyards
The Milsetentayseis vineyards are characterised by their altitude and the uniqueness of their soils. Located in Nebro, the vineyards reach one of the highest points of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, which provides an extreme climatic environment that significantly influences the quality of the grapes. The terrain of Nebro is known for its deep red clay soils, rich in minerals such as mica, quartz and feldspar, which were mined in old mines.
The winery has a mixture of old vineyards and new plantings. In total, approximately 30 hectares are managed, of which 10 hectares are traditional vines over 30 years old. These vineyards are home to a surprising varietal diversity, with more than 20 different grape varieties identified, includingTempranillo, Bobal, Graciano, Monastrell and white varieties such as Viura and Albillo.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Milsetentayseis focuses on making wines that faithfully reflect the terroir and winemaking tradition of the region. The winery adopts sustainable viticulture and winemaking techniques that seek to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the character of the soil. The winemaking is done on a plot-by-plot basis, which allows different materials (wood, concrete and even vats) to be tested in order to find the most suitable for each plot.
As for the ageing process, although it started with new barrels, the house's ideal is to combine 70% used oak with 30% new barrels. This approach allows the wines to develop complexity and balance without being dominated by the notes of new oak.
The altitude of the vineyards plays a crucial role in the freshness and acidity of the wines. The constant air currents and the extreme climate of Nebro contribute to the excellent health of the grapes, resulting in a raw material of extraordinary quality. The winery seeks to anticipate climate change by selecting higher and cooler areas for its plantings.
Milsetentayseis wines stand out for their respect and expression of the terroir: Milsetentayseis Tinto represents the unique environment of nebro with singular soils and a remarkable altitude, characterised by its tension and freshness, with a winemaking that seeks the elegance, subtlety and balance of the world's great wines; and Milsetentayseis La Peña is a wine with a marked identity of its own, made from old nebro vines and mineral-rich clay soils, standing out as an exceptionally serious rosé, with freshness and liveliness, showing memorable intensity and a long, saline finish.
The winery also prides itself on its innovative approach and commitment to quality, allowing them to create wines that not only represent the terroir of nebro, but also set new standards in Ribera del Duero.
In short, Bodega Milsetentayseis is an exciting project that combines tradition and modernity, taking advantage of the unique characteristics of its vineyards to make exceptional wines. With a focus on sustainability, innovation and respect for the terroir, this winery is positioning itself as a benchmark in Ribera del Duero, offering wines that are an authentic expression of their origin.
