Buy Wine from Costers del Siurana
The winery Costers del Siurana is located in the D.O.Ca. Priorat and is owned by Carles Pastrana and Mariona Jarque, two of the pioneers who at the end of the 70s bravely decided to undertake the project that would recover and would raise the wines of the area years later. The idea is to recover the concept already developed by the old monks of Scala Dei.
Carlos and Mariona created Clos de l'Obac and Miserere and replanted vines on the banks of the Siurana River. It was not until 1989 when the first vintage of Clos de l'Obac wines was produced.
The characteristic soils of the area are mainly slate (licorella) which, although almost always very stratified, can be found in different colors depending on its ferric or hydrocarbon composition. Regarding the type of plantations, we can find Garnacha, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, bush trained and with an average age between 50 and 80 years old, as well as younger vines, about 25 years old on average and in double cordon trellis system of Royat or double arm.
Once in the winery, the vinification pattern is similar year after year both in terms of the grapes used and the percentage of grapes used in order to reflect as clearly as possible the character of the vintage. The wines, once fermented in stainless steel tanks, are then aged in French oak barrels from different origins such as Nevers, Allier or Limousin, where they rest for ten to fifteen months; during this time, different manual rackings are carried out in order to eliminate the thick lees; and finally, for the stabilization system, both after fermentation and before bottling, the cold natural temperature of the winters in the area is used.
One of the oldest wines of what we would call Priorat 2.0 is its Clos de l'Obac: structured and powerful, with the character of the soil where it was born, seven vineyards with different orientations and heights in the village of Gratallops.
