Buy Wine from Domaine Gauby
Domaine Gauby is located in one of the most forgotten but most surprising places in France for the quality of its wines. In the middle of the Eastern Pyrenees, in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, Gerard Gauby was one of the precursors in developing ancient vines within the region in the 80's. Together with his son Lionel, they produce natural, organic and biodynamic wines, from natural yeasts and with minimal intervention. Their wines are elegant, subtle, fine but above all authentic.
Vineyards and viticulture
The vineyards of Domaine Gauby are located in the Agly valley, near the small town of Calce, situated between the winding roads and steep hills of the Eastern Pyrenees, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
Situated about 400 metres above sea level, the soils of this area are characterised by limestone, occasionally mixed with black shale. Amidst the stones, fine and rough soils, grow gnarled vine bushes.
The vines are a mixture of grasses and weeds, which help to retain moisture in the arid soil, act as green manure and press the vines to deepen their roots in search of water and minerals.
Gerard Gauby inherited five hectares from his grandfather in 1985 and it was then that he began to work the vineyards following organic farming, later also adopting biodynamic principles, becoming one of the precursors of the region. After rescuing many old vineyard plots, the five hectares were converted into about 45, divided into 150 individual plots, with a great diversity of grape varieties and soils.
The white grape varieties include Carignan Blanc, Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Gris, Macabeo, Muscat, Vermentino and Viognier. As for the red varieties, we can find Carignan, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
While some of these varieties are relatively new, some plantations are pre-phylloxera.
Wines from Domaine Gauby
Domaine Gauby wines are made with a minimum of intervention. The grapes are harvested by hand and, while the red ones receive a maceration of two to three days before fermentation, the white ones are subjected to a slow pneumatic pressing.
Spontaneous fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, only a minimum of sulphur is added and there is no filtration or clarification.
Among the most outstanding wines of Domaine Gauby, there are the white aged wines Gauby Les Calcinaires Blanc 2019 and Gauby Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2018, the red aged wine Gauby Vieilles Vignes 2018 and the young red aged wine Gauby Les Calcinaires 2018.
