Buy Wine from The Sadie Family
The Sadie Family winery is located in the Swartland region of South Africa. This South African winery has emerged strongly thanks to its flagship wines, Columella and Palladius. Winemaker Eben Sadie has been described as South Africa'senfant terrible and the country's first certified celebrity winemaker. Prior to his winemaking career, Eben Sadie travelled and worked in various wine regions around the world, including Germany, Austria, Italy, Oregon and Burgundy.
Returning to South Africa, he worked under Charles Back at The Spice Route in 1998, and in 1999 he founded The Sadie Family. The first wine, Columella, was released in 2000 with an initial production of 17 barrels, approximately 5,000 bottles.Vineyards
The Sadie Family vineyards cover a total of 43 hectares, spread over 48 separate plots. These vineyards benefit from diverse terroirs, including the Voor-Paardeberg in the inner district of Paarl. Production is biodynamic, with an extremely low average yield of 0.5kg per vine. The vineyards are located in various areas, including the Paardeberg mountain (Granite), Riebeek mountain (Slate), Piquetberg (Sandstone and Quartz), Coastal Plain (Chalk Soils) and Malmesbury (Terra Rossa Clay Soils).
Philosophy
Eben Sadie's philosophy focuses on the expression of terroir and the constant search for old vines and unique terroirs. His wines are considered to be some of the most terroir driven and mineral expressive. Vinification is carried out without excessive additions or manipulations. The red wines are mostly whole-cluster fermented, and the whites are whole-cluster pressed. The idea is not to try to bottle the best wine on the planet, but rather to bottle the most honest wine, showing its true character and location.
