Today, the winery is run by Charles Philipponnat, a passionate perfectionist who comes from a family with over 600 years of tradition in Champagne growing and winemaking. Charles took over the winery in 1999 and has worked to revive the house's golden age, maintaining family traditions while adopting new techniques that enhance the quality of his wines.
Vineyards
Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vineyards, classified as Premier and Grand Cru, spread over the villages of Ay, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay. The jewel in the crown is the Clos des Goisses vineyard, a unique plot due to its south-facing slope, which gives it exceptional ripeness thanks to continuous exposure to the sun. This vineyard stands out for being planted mainly with Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%), being an ideal terroir for the production of characterful champagnes.
The soil of the Philipponnat vineyards is predominantly chalky, which brings minerality and freshness to the wines, while the climate is temperate with continental influences. The specific conditions at Clos des Goisses allow the grapes to ripen optimally, resulting in intense and complex wines.

One of the most characteristic elements of Philipponnat is its use of the solera method, a technique that consists of ageing reserve wines in oak barrels and using them to enrich the blends of the wines. This practice allows each bottle to contain a "trace" of previous vintages, giving the wines greater complexity and depth.
In the cellar, the fermentation of the vintage wines is partially carried out in oak barrels, which gives them greater structure and ageing capacity. Philipponnat's basic non-vintage wines, such as the Royale Réserve and Reserve Rosé, are aged for at least three years before disgorgement, while the vintage-specific cuvées spend 5 to 10 years in contact with the lees, which contributes to their complexity and longevity.
