Buy Wine from Carl Loewen
The Carl Loewen winery is located in the heart of the Mosel wine region in Germany, specifically in the small municipality of Leiwen, which has just over 1,000 inhabitants. This region stretches along three major rivers: the Moselle, the Saar and the Ruwer, and is known for producing some of the most renowned and world-renowned white wines, especially those made from the Riesling grape variety.
History
The tradition of the Carl Loewen winery dates back to 1803. During the Säkularisation under Napoleon, the ancestors of the Loewen family acquired vineyards in the Maximiner Klosterlay. One of the winery's greatest prides is a very special vineyard: in 1896, a plot on the Maximin Herrenberg was planted with ungrafted Riesling vines, making it one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world. This plot has remained intact to this day and is the basis for their high quality wines.
Today, the winery is masterfully run by Carl and his son Christopher.
Vineyards
The Moselle region is characterised by its extreme terroir, with steep, rugged terrain and a rather cold climate. However, this region is rich in history, as vines were cultivated here long before the arrival of the Romans. The Carl Loewen winery covers about 6 hectares of land, where mainly Riesling is grown, as well as a small percentage of Müller Thurgau and Pinot Blanc.
The Maximin Herrenberg is a south-facing vineyard with a terroir of roten Schiefer (red slate), a rare soil structure that gives the wines a unique aromatic structure. On the other hand, Thörnicher Ritsch is known for its brüchigen Grauschiefer (fragile grey slate) and its steep terrain. Laurentiuslay, a vineyard that has gained an international reputation in recent years, is characterised by its original profile, with numerous small terraces and dry walls.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Carl Loewen winery focuses on producing pure wines with great personality, with as little intervention as possible in the vineyard and in the cellar. The aim is to let the terroir speak for itself and tell the story of the different vintages. This philosophy is based on traditional winemaking, interpreted in a contemporary way. The winery seeks to allow the treasures of nature to flourish with minimal intervention.
Each year, the winery produces 21 labels that faithfully reflect the terroir of the Moselle. From simple expressions such as the "Quant" and the "Alte Reben" to high quality wines such as the Maximin Herrenberg, made from Riesling vines dating back to 1896.
