Buy Wine from Bodegas Avancia
Bodegas Avancia is located in Valdeorras, Galicia, situated on the slate slopes that rise above the river Sil. The name "Valdeorras" comes from Latin, which translates as "Valley of Gold", referring to the ancient mining activity of the Romans in the area. Valdeorras has historically stood out for being an ideal terroir for the cultivation of the native grapes Godello and Mencía.
Currently, Nacho Álvarez, chief winemaker and technical director of the Jorge Ordóñez group, is in charge of winemaking at Avancia. With an impeccable track record, Álvarez has worked on iconic projects both inside and outside Spain, bringing his vast experience to enhance the quality of this winery's wines.
Vineyards
The Bodegas Avancia vineyard covers a total of approximately 23 hectares, cultivated on predominantly slate soils, characteristic of the Valdeorras region. The viticulture practised is dry-farmed and organic, a choice that allows the vines to develop deeper roots, favouring a better absorption of the minerals in the soil, resulting in wines with a marked minerality. The vines, mostly old, give the wines a unique concentration, both in aromas and structure.
The climate of Valdeorras is particularly favourable for growing Godello and Mencía. Despite being in Galicia, a region known for its humid climate, Valdeorras enjoys more hours of sunshine and warmer temperatures than the rest of the region, which helps the grapes to ripen optimally, while retaining a refreshing acidity. This combination of altitude, slatey soils, and the valley's special microclimate create an exceptional terroir that allows Bodegas Avancia to produce wines of the highest quality.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas Avancia focuses on making wines that reflect the terroir of Valdeorras, using traditional methods that respect the environment. Its speciality is to work with the native varieties of the area, with a particular emphasis on Godello and Mencía, always seeking to highlight the uniqueness of these grapes in each bottle.
As for vinification, the winery follows very artisanal processes. Fermentations are carried out in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, using indigenous yeasts to preserve as much as possible the natural flavours of the grapes and their terroir. The wines undergo long macerations to extract the full complexity and concentration from the grapes. In addition, the winery uses a minimal intervention approach in the cellar, allowing the wine to express its character in the purest and most authentic way.
Bodegas Avancia 's leitmotif is to create wines that speak of the place they come from, respecting both the environment and local winemaking traditions. At every stage of the process, from organic viticulture to minimal intervention winemaking, the winery seeks to highlight the personality of the Godello and Mencía grapes, producing wines that are not only pleasing to the palate, but also tell a story about the unique terroir of Valdeorras.
The winery's international recognition has been endorsed by influential figures in the wine world, such as Robert Parker Jr., who has described Bodegas Avancia as one of his favourite wineries in Spain, praising particularly its wines made from Godello, to which he attributes a texture similar to Chardonnay, but with more mineral and fresh notes. This has placed Avancia in a prominent position as a leading producer of Godello in the world.
