The Fonterenza winery is located in the heart of Tuscany, in the Montalcino region. Originally, Fonterenza was the holiday home of its founders, a place where they connected with nature and where their bond with Montalcino and the countryside was born. This bond with the land and nature is reflected in the way they planted their vineyards, following a feeling that grew with them since childhood.
Today, Fonterenza is not only their home, but also the name of their wines. From the beginning, the winery has followed natural rhythms and paid special attention to the environment, allowing them to capture the unique characteristics of this land and climate in every bottle.Vineyards
The Fonterenza vineyards are located in the southeastern part of the municipality of Montalcino, specifically in the village of Poggio San Polo. They are situated at an altitude range between 420-450 metres above sea level. A distinctive feature of this region is the forest surrounding the vineyards and the Monte Amiata, which acts as a protective barrier against inclement weather. In addition, the circulation of sea winds coming from the southwest and meeting with cool currents from the north and northeast, together with the changing light, are essential climatic factors in the area.
The soil in which the vines grow is diverse, composed of clays, galestro, sandstone, quartzite blocks and siltstone. This variety of soils, together with the microclimate and agronomic choices, allows to maintain a water balance even in years of drought. In total, Fonterenza has 4.2 hectares of vineyard, divided into two macro-plots: "Bosco" and "Strada". These plots are subdivided into several smaller ones, all cultivated with the Sangiovese variety.
Philosophy
Fonterenza's philosophy is focused on the production of natural, expressive and territorial wines. In the cellar, the wines mature for long periods, from 40 to 72 months for the Brunello, and about two years for the Rosso di Montalcino and Alberello. Each vintage has its own history, so they respect the wine's time and give it the necessary space in the cellar. During vinification, they use different techniques such as pumping over, delestage, manual destemming and submerged cap maceration. For fermentation, they use oak vats and cement tanks. The grapes ferment spontaneously, without temperature control or the addition of oenological products, in order to preserve the characteristics of the vintage and to express the terroir to the maximum.
Vineyard management follows the principles of natural viticulture, with agricultural practices that follow the lunar and planetary phases. All the vineyards are worked by hand and are confronted with vine diseases using only sulphur and copper in low doses, alternating with natural products.
