Buy Wine from Celler Frisach
Although it was in 2009 when Joan and Francesc Ferré Frisach started the Celler Frisach winery, this family has been following the winemaking tradition for more than 200 years.
This winery is located in Terra Alta, Spain, specifically in Corbera d'Ebre, Tarragona, where, by the way, Joaquim Frisach, Joan and Francesc's grandfather, founded the first cooperative in the area.
Paying homage to ancestors
In 2001, Francesc Ferré Frisach bought an old winery from the 1930s and modernised it in order to make his own wines. Now his son is in charge of the winery.
The Celler Frisach winery was born as a tribute to his ancestors. It has more than 40 hectares, and the oenologists Joan and Francesc work old vineyards in an ecological way, leaving the plant cover to grow spontaneously to maintain the humidity of the soil. In addition, they use organic components, without chemical additives, to improve their texture.
On the other hand, they follow the lunar cycles, and only use some of their grapes to make their wines, the rest they sell to other wineries. They strive to produce more quality and less quantity, so the yields are very low but the wines are exquisite.
The wines produced at the Celler Frisach winery are natural, and their creators take care not to add sulphites or other chemicals. The grapes are harvested by hand and in boxes. Each grape variety is microvinified separately in the winery.
The grapes are fermented on their skins and aged for months on their lees, trying to imitate traditional methods, which gives the wines greater intensity and originality.
The winery follows the strict rules of the Catalan Council for Organic Agricultural Production (CCPAE).
Rescuing forgotten grapes
At the Celler Frisach winery, the best wines are made from the Garnatxa Blanca, Gis and Peluda varieties. Garnacha is the native variety of the region, although they prefer to keep its old name and call it Vernatxas. They also grow foreign varieties such as Cariñena, Merlot, Syrah and Ojo de liebre.
Joan and Francesc have made an effort to recover ancient grape varieties, which is why, with the support of the Rovira i Vigili University of Tarragona, they are cataloguing and genetically analysing these varieties. The aim of this is to be able to make plant multiplication, so that grapes such as Vernatxot Rajeno or Vernatxa gris are not lost in oblivion.
Traditional and fresh wines
The wines produced at the Celler Frisach winery have their own identity, their creators respect their culture and the legacy inherited from their ancestors, which is why even the labels are written in Terraltí, which is a Catalan dialect used in the area.
The traditional aspect stands out in every drop of wine produced at the Celler Frisach winery, and you can also feel the typical freshness of the wines that are made according to organic principles, with the utmost respect and care for the earth.
Joan and Francesc use ancestral techniques throughout the entire cultivation process, right up to the stages that take place in the winery, in an effort to maintain the tradition that characterises the Frisach family.
In addition to the vineyards, this family also works their own orchard and Calanda peach nursery.
Tasting the best wines in the trenches
It is important to note that the Celler Frisach winery offers tours for visitors throughout the year, where you can enjoy a guided tasting of four of its best organic wines in a beautiful historical landscape in the trenches, where the Battle of the Ebro took place.
The visit lasts two hours and is open to couples or groups of up to 15 people, who can tour the trench area and the Civil War shelters.
