Located in the charming village of Merfy, in the Massif de St-Thierry northwest of Reims, France, the Chartogne-Taillet winery boasts a rich winemaking history dating back to 1683, the year of the first documented mention of the Taillet family's winemaking activity in the region. This place, although not as renowned today, has been famous for its wines since the Middle Ages, being praised by historical figures such as Pardulus, Bishop of Laon in the 13th century.
Alexandre Chartogne, before assuming leadership of the family winery, gained experience and expertise working alongside Anselme Selosse, an influential figure in the world of viticulture, who left a profound mark on his vision and approach to winemaking.
Vineyards
The Chartogne-Taillet vineyards extend over a unique and distinctive terroir in Merfy. The soil, composed of layers of clay and sand on a chalk base, creates a dual environment that favours the growth of the vines. This particular terroir allows the roots of the vines to go deep into the soil, sometimes reaching more than 20 metres deep, allowing them to absorb a rich minerality that is reflected in every bottle produced by the winery.
Each vineyard plot is treated and vinified individually, respecting and highlighting the unique characteristics of each Merfy terroir. This meticulous and detailed approach to viticulture seeks, above all, to preserve and express the authenticity and diversity of Merfy's terroirs, resulting in wines that are a true reflection of the land in which they are grown.
Philosophy
Chartogne-Taillet focuses on making wines that faithfully and clearly express the characteristics of Merfy's terroirs. To this end, respectful and conscious viticultural practices are implemented, such as ploughing the vineyards and planting various cover crops between the rows of vines, which contribute to the health and fertility of the soil.
Fermentation of the wines takes place mainly in stainless steel tanks, although over time there has been an increasing use of used barrels and ceramic eggs for the production of certain wines. This careful and thoughtful process results in fine, complex wines, with a well-structured and defined body, the fruit of a longer than average period of maturation in the cellar.
Among the winery's most emblematic products is Champagne Sainte Anne Brut, a Chartogne-Taillet classic that encapsulates the house's winemaking tradition and expertise, which can be traced back to 1515.
