Abel Mendoza is a small winery located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, on the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Founded in 1988 by Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite Fernández, this winery is an example of dedication and passion for wine.
Abel, the son of winemakers from the region, decided to bottle his wines at the age of 19, always seeking excellence and innovation. Maite, an oenologist by profession, has been his partner in this adventure, contributing her knowledge and passion for wine.Since its beginnings, Abel Mendoza has challenged the traditional rules of Rioja, opting for individual vinification of the plots and focusing on quality over quantity. Today, the winery has 20 hectares of vineyards spread over 35 different plots, producing wines that are sought after and appreciated all over the world.
Vineyards
The Abel Mendoza winery cultivates its vineyards on clay-limestone soils with variations in structure and texture, from rocky to sandy soils. These plots are spread throughout the Sonsierra, in municipalities such as San Vicente, Labastida and Ábalos. The climate in this region is continental with Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, creating particular microclimates that benefit the vines.
The grape varieties grown include mainly Tempranillo (17.5 hectares), but also others such as Graciano, Malvasía, Viura, Garnacha blanca and Torrontés. Abel and Maite work in a sustainable way, using phytosanitary products only when absolutely necessary, and avoiding the use of pesticides in their vineyards.
Philosophy
Abel Mendoza' s philosophy is based on environmentally friendly viticulture and winemaking that reflects the character of the terroir. Abel and Maite practice organic and biodynamic agriculture, although they do not certify their wines under these labels. Their aim is to produce wines that express the particularities of each vintage and plot, following a Burgundian methodology of fermentation and individual treatment of the plots.
In the winery, Maite is in charge of the vinification, making sure that the wine reflects the character of the soil, the climate and the grape variety. The wines do not follow the traditional Rioja classification and do not carry "Reserva" or "Gran Reserva" labels, as the winery focuses on the quality and uniqueness of each wine, rather than the appellations.
The winemaking process at Abel Mendoza varies according to the type of wine. Harvesting is always done by hand, and the grapes are carefully selected to ensure the best quality. For young wines such as Jarrarte Joven, carbonic maceration is used in open concrete tanks. In the case of Jarrarte and Selección Personal, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months.
Grano a Grano is made by hand selecting the best grapes, which are fermented in small stainless steel tanks and then aged in new French oak barrels for up to 18 months. The single varietal white wines are fermented in new French oak barrels with batonnage and aged for approximately five months.
The Abel Mendoza winery represents dedication, respect for nature and passion for viticulture and oenology. Their wines, both red and white, reflect the unique character of Rioja, and are an authentic expression of the terroir and winemaking techniques employed by Abel and Maite. This winery is a true hidden treasure of the region, offering high quality wines that are appreciated by connoisseurs and wine lovers all over the world.
