Buy Wine from Bodegas Matarromera
Bodega Matarromera is located in the heart of Ribera del Duero, in the so-called Golden Mile, between the towns of Olivares and Valbuena de Duero, in Valladolid. Founded in 1988 by Carlos Moro, Matarromera is the fruit of the family's passion for wine and the winemaking tradition that Carlos inherited from his ancestors. Since its beginnings, the winery has combined respect for tradition with innovation, becoming one of the most renowned wineries in the region and in Spain.
Vineyards
Bodega Matarromera sits on privileged terrain. Sheltered by the Duero Valley, between the towns of Olivares and Valbuena de Duero, are the vineyards from which Matarromera makes its wines, vintage after vintage.
More than 160 hectares of limestone soils, almost white, in which the Tempranillo grape expresses itself with total elegance, are the starting point for the magic of winemaking to begin. A small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also used by the winemaking team to achieve unique nuances, mythical tones and unforgettable sensations.
The Ribera del Duero area is made up of an ancient, razed plinth covered in most of the basin by tertiary and quaternary sediments. These sediments are mainly silty or clayey sands alternating with limestone and marl layers, as well as calcareous concretions. These sediments were deposited during the Miocene - some ten million years ago - in rivers and lakes. The valley bottoms are, in turn, occupied by very recent sediments: mainly gravels and sands, which are arranged to form terraces or extensive flood plains on the sides of the low water courses.
The region is dominated by the Tempranillo grape variety, which, in addition to its privileged orography, is perfect for the area's continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers.
Philosophy
Bodega Matarromera 's philosophy is based on the constant search for excellence, combining tradition and innovation at every stage of the winemaking process. For Carlos Moro, "Wineries have to be flexible, dynamic and modern companies, but without losing the essence of what we have treasured throughout our lives". This harmony between respect for traditional techniques and the application of cutting-edge technologies is the cornerstone of his approach.
The grape harvest is one of the most crucial moments in the production of Matarromera wines. The choice of the harvest date is not a random decision, but involves a detailed analysis process in which various parameters of the grape's condition are evaluated. At Ribera del Duero's Golden Mile, the grapes are harvested by hand, with a double selection of bunches to ensure that only the best quality grapes reach the vinification process. These grapes are then sorted berry by berry, harvested in special boxes of no more than 20 kg, thus preserving the quality and freshness of the fruit.
Matarromera integrates in its facilities a variety of materials that provide its own identity: local stone, brick, galvanised steel, oak and concrete, which represent the union of tradition and strength. All these elements converge to create an environment that is not only functional, but also conveys the character of the wine and its history, a space where authenticity is lived in every corner.
Innovation is a key value at Matarromera. Over the years, they have been committed to the development of techniques that allow them to be sustainable and, at the same time, preserve the essence of their wines. The commitment to quality is manifested in the investment in state-of-the-art technology for temperature control during fermentation and the use of French and American oak barrels for ageing. Every step, from harvesting to maturation, is carried out with meticulous attention to detail.
The winemaking process follows a process in which every aspect of fermentation and ageing is taken care of. After the grapes are harvested and rigorously selected, they are fermented in stainless steel tanks, where the temperature is controlled to ensure that the aromas and flavours remain intact. Ageing takes place in French and American oak barrels, where the wines rest for the time necessary to achieve the complexity and depth that characterise Matarromera wines. Patience is a virtue in the world of wine, and at Matarromera, each vintage is treated with the respect it deserves, allowing time to do its work.
For Carlos Moro, the leitmotiv of the project has always been to create wines that can move, that tell a story and that connect with people. This vision has led Matarromera to position itself as one of the most renowned wineries in Ribera del Duero and in Spain in general. Its wines are not only the fruit of the land, but also of passion, effort and the desire to transmit the best of each vintage to those who enjoy them.
Bodega Matarromera stands out for its focus on sustainability. Respect for the natural environment is not just a discourse, but a tangible practice at every stage of the winemaking process. Energy efficiency systems, water treatment and environmentally friendly agricultural techniques have been implemented. This philosophy of sustainability translates into a commitment to give back to the land part of what it has given them, thus maintaining a balance that ensures the continuity of this noble activity for future generations.
In short, Matarromera is not simply a winery. It is the reflection of a family tradition, a life project that seeks excellence and an emotional connection with each glass. Each bottle is the result of years of dedication and passion, an invitation to explore the landscapes of the Duero and to savour the authenticity of a land rich in history and nuances. When you uncork a bottle of Matarromera, you are not just opening a wine; you are unleashing a story, an emotion, a small piece of Ribera del Duero that arrives at our tables to be enjoyed and shared.
