Buy Wine from Mas Doix
The history of Mas Doix has been linked to viticulture since 1850, over the last five generations. This small family winery is characterised by taking on the personality of the Priorat lands, which is faithfully transferred to the wines.
Its current history
In 1998, the current Mas Doix winery was founded in Poboleda by the Doix and Llagostera families, with the idea of resuming wine production, which began in 1850 and was interrupted by phylloxera.
Josep Maria Doix, Ramon and Valentín Llagostera enthusiastically joined in this initiative.
Since then, the aim has been to produce a wine that conveys the values of the vineyard and the characteristic terroir of the Priorat. In other words, to produce a wine that transmits the qualities of the vineyards and the unique terroir of the Priorat.
Mas Doix de Priorat is located in the small municipality of Poboleda, in the north-western part of the Priorat D.O.Q..
Nowadays, Valentín and Ramón Llagostera are co-founders of the winery and create wines by harvesting old Garnacha and Cariñena vines, giving value to the grapes that were previously worked in the Poboleda Cooperative.
Characteristics of the vineyards
The winery's vineyards are located on slate licorella soils, planted with vines between 70 and 100 years old, with low yields and located between 350 and 400 metres above sea level.
The village of Poboleda, where the vineyards of the Mas Doix winery are located, is located in the northwestern part of Priorat, sheltered by two natural barriers: the Montsant mountain range and the Molló mountain range.
Given these characteristics, the cool breeze that enters from the northwest and lowers the average temperature lengthens the ripening process. For this reason, the harvest in Poboleda takes one or two weeks longer than in Gratallops; during this time the grapes accumulate complexity and dreamy aromas.
Its estates and vineyards
The winery has 12 hectares of its own vineyards spread over five estates located at an altitude of between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, cultivated organically and with some biodynamic practices.
The first estate is Doix, with 3 hectares of 85-year-old Grenache and Carignan, the jewel in the winery's crown. Then there is Les Crestes, with 3 hectares planted with Grenache and Merlot and Mas de l'Ossó, with 4 hectares of Grenache, Merlot and Syrah.
Next, we have Els Ullastres, with one hectare planted with Grenache, and La Venteta, which has one hectare planted with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Since 1999 there are 4 hectares more from local winegrowers, exclusively of old Grenache and Carignan vines.
Grapes used to make their magnificent wines
The grapes used to make Mas Doix's fresh, elegant and balanced wines are mainly Grenache and Carignan.
The winery's aim is to preserve and maintain the old Grenache and Carignan vines, planted in 1902.
Mas Doix wines are essentially based on aromatic and gustatory complexity without falling into excess. They are mineral and rigorous wines, the result of a meticulous winemaking process. They are incredible!
And you, have you already tasted the wonderful wines of the Mas Doix winery? Leave us your comments!
