Buy Wine from Battenfeld Spanier
The Battenfeld Spanier winery is located in Hohen-Sülzen, at the southernmost tip of the Wonnegau near Worms. This region is famous for its chalky subsoil. The history of the winery dates back to 1991, when H.O. Spanier founded his own wine estate after completing his training as an oenologist.
Since its inception, the winery has been dedicated to organic principles. H.O. Spanier is the current vigneron and is a member of the "Académie Internationale du vin", a non-commercial organisation dedicated to the study of noble wines. In addition, since 2005, the winery has adopted biodynamic methods, reflecting a strong interconnection with nature.Vineyards
The Battenfeld Spanier vineyards cover an area of 24 hectares. 70% of the grapes grown are Riesling, followed by 18% Spätburgunder, and also Weissburgunder and Silvaner. The terroir is mainly chalky, with lime banks criss-crossing the land. The vines must take root in this porous, water-storing rock to obtain nutrition. Thanks to the Donnersberg, which intercepts the climate from the west, the Wonnegau has less rainfall and drier summers than elsewhere. This results in ripe and vibrant wines, with aromas more of stone than fruit.
Philosophy
The winery's philosophy focuses on organic and biodynamic viticulture. H.O. Spanier believes in restoring and maintaining the microbial life of the soil, considering the soil as the core of their endeavour. His wines explore the space between intervention and inaction, between reason and risk. For him, the grape is the interpreter that translates Wonnegau's extremely calcareous soils. What interests him is the spectrum of aromas from the stones and the soil beyond the ephemeral fruit, highlighting the dancing minerality and the saline character of origin.
