Buy Wine from Bodegas Los Astrales
Bodegas Los Astrales is located in Anguix village, a Burgos town named after an Arab expression that can be translated as “snakes” due to the big quantity of such reptiles in the area. Anguix is one of the communities settled in the highest and northernmost part of D.O. Ribera del Duero. Romera de la Cruz family founded the winery in the year 2000, after being engaged in wine-making for several generations and selling their production to third parties. They have Eduardo García, son of Mariano García who is Mauro, Maurodos and Aalto wineries co-owner, and former oenologist at Vega Sicilia amongst others, to support them at Los Astrales.
Bodegas Los Astrales has about 30 vineyard hectares, all of them in Anguix, and 12 of which goblet pruned in Los Astrales, La Cañada and El Val plots. The rest are new plantations that had been sowed between 2003 and 2004, with narrower planting layouts than old-vines, so they can control its vigorousness. The prevailing variety in the zone is the typical Tinta Fina. Vineyards are north-south facing and soils usually have a clay-calcareous base with a surface rich in ferric clay, thus enabling a good water retention and prevention of water stress suffering. These soils produce warm wines nicely contrasting with the fresh climate; they can be both full-bodied and fresh. Vineyards performance range from 2.500 to 4.000 kg but can be reduced on account of the usual spring frosts as well as long summer droughts. Green pruning is carried out at the end of May to remove the possible vegetation excess and to improve the ventilation. They practice reasoned agriculture and therefore the treatments applied on vines is minimum, no pest or herbicide are used, only sulphur to avoid vine diseases.
Once harvest is in the cellar, grapes keep on being regarded as much as possible and macerations are not lengthy, they avoid different pumping and use indigenous yeasts not to supply any artificial flavour to the wine. It is very important for Bodegas Los Astrales to carry out such methods in order to obtain the maximum scent and that pleasant sensation fine tannins bring along. As far as ageing is concerned, wines usually stay from 14 to 20 months in barrels, mainly French oak (4/5 parts of their stock) with a 1 to 3 ratio of new ones. Racking process is performed three times: one after malolactic fermentation, and two while ageing in cask.
Bodegas Los Astrales produces two wines: Astrales, a pure Ribera del Duero wine, with remarkable tannins, plenty of red fruit, a slight mineral background and some spice nuances; the other one, Astrales Christina, produced only with the grapes from Pago de Fuentesanta plot, settled in a side hill, these old vines are planted in clay-sandy soils so that wine reveals a uncommon minerality and a fresh fruit presence.
As far as production is concerned, Bodegas Los Astrales anticipates outnumbering the initial stock of 35.000-50.000 bottles to around 100.000 bottles per year, which is the estimation given the vineyards harvest and cellar facilities.
Bodegas Los Astrales: Successful with both vineyards and wineries connaisseurs.
