The Fontodi winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, specifically in the valley south of the town of Panzano, known as the "Conca d'Oro". This valley, shaped like an amphitheatre, combines a high altitude location with a chalky clay soil and a truly remarkable microclimate. It is generally warm and dry with a marked difference between daytime and night-time temperatures.
Fontodi has been in the Manetti family since 1968, but has been in Chianti for centuries, producing the finest terracottas at its factory in Ferrone.
Giovanni Manetti has run the estate since 1980 and ensures that the wines are made with the same meticulous care as the vineyards and winery. He is renowned for his commitment to the integrity of the Sangiovese grape and has worked with consulting winemaker Franco Barnabei to transform Fontodi and improve the estate and the wine portfolio, making it one of the best in Tuscany.
Vineyards
The Fontodi vineyards cover 90 hectares of south-facing vineyards and the natural amphitheatre allow the grapes to fully ripen. In addition, the altitude guarantees cool nights, resulting in the retention of good acidity and heady aromas. The soils here, known as 'Scaglia Toscana', allow excellent drainage and are composed of a mixture of Galestro(schistose clay) and Alberese(limestone), encouraging the vines to develop deep roots.
Philosophy
Focused on making wines that exalt the character of the vines and the territory. Vinification and ageing in wood take place in the modern cellar, built on descending levels to take advantage of gravity. This ensures the greatest possible respect for the natural integrity of the grapes, with the aim of enhancing the character and elegance of the wines. In addition, the winery strives to maximise internal resources, thus reducing the need for any external input. This attention to detail and respect for nature translates into wines that are a true expression of the terroir and the grape.
