The family winery Domaine Schoffit is located in the wine region of Alsace, near Colmar, specifically in the northeast of France. This winery has a long history dating back to its foundation in approximately 1599. In its beginnings, agriculture and horticulture were carried out in its hectares, but it was in 1973 when Robert Schofitt baptised the winery and decided that it would only be dedicated to the production of wines, so it is considered that it is from this date when it was officially constituted as a "domaine".
The vineyards are planted in the best production areas of the region, including the volcanic soil of Rangen Thann, and in Clos Saint-Théobald.
Most of the vineyards have a strategic location that helps the grapes to ripen better, thanks to the excellent sun exposure on the steeply sloping terraces where they are grown.
Ecological approach
In the vineyards cultivated by the Domaine Schoffit winery, organic agriculture is practised and techniques based on biodynamic principles are applied. In the cellar, traditional techniques are used, the wines are fermented slowly with their own yeasts for three months to a year and then aged in stainless steel tanks.
Thanks to the sustainable viticulture, the different types of soils and the techniques used in the Domaine Schoffit winery, their wines have been recognised by different experts at a national and international level as some of the best in the area, and even in the world.
The best wines of France
With a history that goes back more than 400 years, of all the wines produced in this winery, the white wines of the Riesling variety are considered to be of very high quality. Moreover, they are balanced, complex and very elegant wines.
In order to elaborate their wines, this winery chooses Pinot gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer grape varieties. In this way, an interesting diversity of wines is obtained so that everyone can choose the one they prefer according to their tastes and needs.
Due to the continuous conflicts in the Alsace area, the winery has strong Franco-Germanic influences, which are quite noticeable in some of the techniques used to produce the wines, and in the results obtained.
A legacy that has lasted for several generations
At the Domaine Schoffit winery, you can find certified organic wines, thanks to its biodynamic practices. Most of the wines produced at this winery are fruity with herbal notes, but they have great character and reflect the characteristics of the terroir.
Bernard Schoffit is currently in charge of the winery, and although it is quite modern and well equipped, he and his son Alexander, who accompanies him in this adventure, have made a great effort to maintain artisanal and environmentally friendly techniques.
Using the most biodynamic and ecological methods possible, and employing gentle, traditional winemaking practices, they have tried to make the necessary conversions so that the wines are as organic as possible.
This second generation running the Domaine Schoffit winery has recovered several vineyards that were abandoned due to the difficulty of the steep slopes.
As early as the 12th century, medieval monks residing at St Theobald's monastery in Thann were making wine in this region, and in their honour, the Domaine Schoffit winery has named its plot and its wine.
Some of the oldest Chasselas and other grape vines in Alsace are said to belong to the Domaine Schoffit winery.
It seems that no matter how many years go by, no matter how many generations pass by, the family's experience, knowledge and passion for creating the best wines of France is a legacy that will continue to be passed down through the family.
