Buy Wine from Shafer Vineyards
Shafer Vineyards is a gem nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, a region that has been the epicentre of grape growing and wine production since 1880. This family-owned winery was founded in 1972 by John Shafer, who left behind a career in publishing in Chicago to embark on a new adventure in the world of wine. With a clear vision and a desire to learn, John began his studies in enology and viticulture at the University of Davis, California.
After completing his studies, he purchased 50 hectares of land in the Stags Leap District sub-area, one of the region's most prestigious appellations. In 1978, after replanting and renovating vineyards that had been affected by phylloxera, John produced his first 12,000 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then, the winery has grown and prospered, with the addition of Doug Shafer, John's son, and Elias Fernandez, who have played crucial roles as winemaker and head viticulturist, respectively.Vineyards
Shafer Vineyards ' vineyards extend over 80 hectares in total, and are located in the heart of a valley surrounded by rolling hills and crossed by the Napa River. These soils are of volcanic origin, the result of the eruptions of the Vaca Mountains. The soil is clayey with gravel, which allows the volcanic debris to retain the sun's heat, favouring optimal ripening of the grapes. However, cool breezes from the Napa Mountains in the evening provide a climatic contrast that is essential for balanced grape ripening. This unique and favourable terroir has been the cradle of varieties such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which have adapted and thrived in this environment.
Philosophy
Shafer Vineyards focuses on producing wines that reflect the essence and uniqueness of their terroir. Over the years, the winery has produced iconic wines such as: Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, a white wine that comes from the Los Carneros sub-zone and stands out for its aromatic notes of pineapple, kiwi, lime, caramel and pastry cream; Shafer Merlot, a red wine that evokes the great wines of Pomerol; while Shafer One Point Five is a powerful, dense wine born from rocky soils; Shafer Relentless is a tribute to the Syrah wines of the Rhône; and Shafer Hillside Select is the winery's flagship wine, made exclusively with Cabernet Sauvignon and noted for its notes of vanilla, chocolate, fine tobacco and allspice.
