Buy Wine from Alfredo Maestro
Alfredo Maestro is a self-taught winegrower and winemaker who since 1998 has been learning from books and talking to local winegrowers and winemakers about oenology and viticulture and how to make unique wines in the D.O. Castilla y León.
His beginnings
In 1998 Alfredo Maestro left the world of finance and returned to his native Peñafiel to start making wine.
There he cultivated his first vines and began his self-taught training in viticulture and oenology. He read books and experimented with his elaborations. Soon after, he began to study winemaking with local winegrowers and winemakers.
At first he made wines according to the rules of the area and the techniques accepted by the great majority of Spanish producers. However, he was not convinced by the results, as they did not represent what he wanted to express.
Later, he realised that if he wanted his wines to represent the land they came from, he had to start from the work in the vineyard, creating the conditions for the grapes to be very healthy and to transmit all their particularities to the wine.
Therefore, he gradually eliminated all external products from the wine during winemaking, ageing and bottling.
In 2000, he acquired his own vineyards. Nowadays, he works with estates in several areas such as Cigales, Ávila, Duratón and Chinchón.
Philosophy of the Alfredo Maestro winery
Alfredo Maestro fervently believes that wine should reflect its terroir, therefore, he eliminates the use of sulphur, acids, filters and stabilisers.
According to this renowned winemaker, only three elements are necessary to create a wine: grapes, well-tended vines and healthy soils.
On the other hand, he follows a natural viticulture without the use of chemical products such as herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.
The vineyards
The winery owns vineyards in Ribera del Duero, Madrid, Sierra de Gredos and Cigales. In the Sierra de Gredos, the different plots give character and personality to the famous El Marciano wine, made with 100% Garnacha from very old vines, over 70 years old, most of them planted on ungrafted vines.
For their sparkling and other wines they select the grape varieties albillo, albillo mayor, cabernet sauvignon, garnacha, garnacha tintorera and merlot.
The success lies in the search for different altitudes, orientations, native varieties in different soils such as alluvial, limestone, clay and sandy soils.
Care of the vineyard and vines
For Bodega Alfredo Maestro, a quality wine requires the care of the plants so that this work is reflected in the grapes.
Thevines must be cared for with the use of natural treatments of the environment so that it can generate self-defence against the evils that threaten it.
The manual harvesting of the grapes, preserving the skin, is one of the efforts made during the grape harvest.
Characteristics of its wines
Alfredo Maestro has produced wines with a unique personality, expressive and economical that defy the conventions and regulations of his region.
After some years of observing wines made by classical methods, with adjustments and additives, he sought a more natural and unadulterated method of winemaking.
Undoubtedly, this was a great decision, and today his wines have a large number of admirers all over the planet for their irreverence and originality.
With some frequency, his wines are made outside the constrictions imposed by the appellations, from the Valtiendas area (Duratón) to Cigales, Ávila or the south of Madrid.
His philosophy of the cult of the vineyard and respect for the character of the indigenous varieties is linked to the biodynamic cultivation methods that Alfredo Maestro practices in his viticulture.
Do you already know some of the unique wines produced by Bodega Alfredo Maestro Tejera? They are unbeatable to describe them in one word!
