The Maria and Sepp Muster winery is located in the heart of Austria, specifically in the village of Leutschach in the South Styria wine region. This winery has a rich history dating back to 1727, making it one of the oldest wineries in the region. Sepp Muster took over the reins of the vineyards from his father in 2000, continuing the family tradition and taking it to new heights.

The current vigneron is Sepp Muster, who together with his wife Maria, has brought the winery to the forefront of biodynamic viticulture in Austria. Before taking over the leadership of the family winery, Sepp and Maria travelled the world, gaining experience and knowledge in different wine regions. During their travels, they were particularly inspired by their encounters with biodynamic agriculture in India and Australia. This experience has profoundly influenced their approach and philosophy in wine production.

Vineyards

Maria and Sepp Muster' s vineyards cover a total of 10 hectares, located in the hills surrounding their home. The predominant soil in these vineyards is known as Opok, a mixture of rocky clay and silt on a subsoil of calcareous marl. This soil type is fundamental to the distinctive character of their wines, providing a rich texture and distinctive minerality.
The climate of the region is described as Illyrian, with warm summers and moderately cold winters. Winds from nearby Koralpe provide cool nights during the warm season, allowing for a late harvest of ripe grapes. The main varieties grown at the winery include Sauvignon, Chardonnay (known locally as Morillon) and Zweigelt.

Philosophy

Maria and Sepp Muster' s philosophy focuses on producing wines that reflect the essence of nature. They strive to maintain a symbiotic relationship with the land, understanding that the vitality of the soil leads to the vitality of the plant and ultimately to each bottle of wine. Since 2003, the winery has been a member of Demeter, an internationally recognised association that certifies biodynamic farming practices.
When it comes to winemaking, they adopt a minimalist approach. They carry out spontaneous fermentation in clay and neutral oak vats, with no fining, no filtration and no sulphur added. This approach allows the wines to fully express the terroir and the essence of the grapes.
The Maria and Sepp Muster winery is a testament to passion, dedication and respect for nature. Through their biodynamic practices and minimalist approach to winemaking, they have succeeded in producing wines that are true reflections of the terroir of South Styria.
