Buy Wine from Bodegas Vega Sicilia
The Vega Sicilia winery symbolises the legend of Spanish red wine. Although it has belonged to different owners, over time it has managed to maintain a unique personality and continues with the philosophy that the best wine is always the one that remains to be made.
Location
The Vega Sicilia winery is located in the heart of Castile, in the interior of the northern plateau with the Duero river bathing its vineyards, in an estate that forms a fertile plain that follows the course of the river.
Located in Valbuena de Duero, its name comes from the fertile valley of the Duero River and a deformation of the word Cecilia.
The estate currently occupied by the vineyard was previously known as Coto de Santa Cecilia, however, its name was phonetically adapted and became Sicilia.
History
In 1864, Eloy Lecanda founded the winery, which throughout its long history has belonged to various owners.
In the 21st century David Álvarez Díez, Marqués de Crémenes acquired the winery and vineyards from the Venezuelan businessman Miguel Neumann and the group was joined by another wine connoisseur, Benjamin Rothschild, owner of important wineries in France.
Todaythe group consists of five wineries, four of them in Spain and one in Hungary.
Since 1982 it has been more than 40 years of effort and dedication, with the incorporation of wines made in different wine-growing areas.
The winery has its own cooperage and is characterised by the use of oak in its ageing and crianzas.
Vineyards
The history of Vega Sicilia is centred on its location on the banks of the Duero River, in the centre of Castile, where its vineyards are bathed in an original way by this river.
The estate has 250 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are planted with the native variety, Tinto Fino or Tempranillo, and the rest with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The composition of the soils is clay-limestone, with brown and alluvial areas.
Of the 250 hectares, 140 hectares are used for the production of Valbuena and Único wines and the rest is used for other wines.
The land on which the grapes are grown is organic, no chemicals are used and pests and diseases are eliminated using biological techniques.
Wines
The wines of Bodega Vega Sicilia are world renowned and are the most sought after. These wines are undoubtedly a Spanish classic that generates respect in the wine world, capable of being kept in bottle for a long time.
Vega Sicilia produces the Único wine whose varieties are Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and Valbuena 5°, a blend of Tempranillo and Merlot.
Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, technical director of the winery since 2015, is currently in charge of the production of these wines.
