Buy Wine from Cascina Tavijn
The Cascina Tavijn winery is located in the hills of Monferrato, in the province of Asti, Italy. This region is known for being a forgotten area, but blessed with unique varieties full of personality. The history of Cascina Tavijn goes back more than a century, when the Verrua family started making wines in these hills.
Originally, the grapes were sold to the local cooperative, but after the turn of the millennium, the family started bottling their own wines. For the last fifteen years, it is Nadia Verrua who has been running the winery, with the help of her parents, Maria Teresa and Ottavio. Nadia represents the fourth generation of winemakers in the family.Vineyards
The winery has approximately 12 hectares of land, half of which is planted with vines of local varieties and the other half with hazelnut trees. These lands are farmed organically. The terrain is characterised by gentle sandy slopes, resulting in wines with a rustic and pure charm. The main grapes of the region are Barbera, Grignolino and Ruché, the latter two varieties being indigenous to the area.
Philosophy
Cascina Tavijn focuses on producing wines in a natural and traditional way. The grapes are harvested by hand and mostly vinified in large Slovenian oak barrels. Stainless steel and fibreglass tanks are also used in bumper vintages and for experiments. Nadia has adopted a progressive approach, abandoning the DOC and DOCG designations in order to free herself from their limitations and to be able to experiment more freely. The idea is not to add too much and not to take anything away, resulting in joyful and delicious wines that are a pleasure to drink.
