Buy Wine from Vinyes Tortuga
After travelling all over the world and from vineyard to vineyard, Dido & Jurriaan (originally from Amsterdam) bought nine hectares of vineyards in the Empordà, (Catalonia, Spain) and started the project Vinyes Tortuga, a winery that focuses on natural and organic wines, under the principles of biodynamics.
Vinyes Tortuga vineyards
The couple's project began in the Alt-Empordà region of Spain, with 9.5 hectares of vineyards planted in the Albera nature reserve and cultivated organically to produce natural wines, with no added sulphites. After a year working in the region, they acquire 11 hectares with vineyards planted with Garnacha, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat and Barbera and in 2018 they achieve their first vintage of wine made 100% with their own grapes.Dido & Jurriaan spent the first years of the project restoring the vineyards, converting them to biodynamics and grafting on other (white) varieties.
From the grapes grown in their vineyards, they make wine in its purest form, with no added sulphites, no added yeast, nutrients or tannins. They work without pumps, and only move the wine by gravity and without filtering.
Vinyes Tortuga wines
Another singularity of Vinyes Tortuga's wines are the names: all of them are derived from album titles or songs that the couple often listen to.Their main highlights are the reds Vinyes Tortuga Hurdy Gurdy 2019, made from Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and Vinyes Tortuga Hunky Dory 2019, made from 100% Garnacha.
