Buy Wine from Fritz Haag
The Fritz Haag winery is located in the heart of the Mittelmosel and has a prominent place in the long history of the region. The first documented mention of the estate dates back to 1605, when the village was called Dusemond. To better evoke the stellar reputation of the world-famous "Brauneberger Juffer" and "Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr" vineyards - which even Napoleon regarded as pearls of the Mosel region - the village changed its name in 1925 from Dusemond to Brauneberg.
The Fritz Haag winery, now run by Oliver Haag, continues to honour this tradition through its supplementary designation "Dusemonder Hof". Wilhelm Haag, born in 1937, ran the estate with a philosophy focused on quality until he finally handed over the reins to his son, Oliver Haag. Oliver took over the management of the winery in 2005 and since then has run it together with his wife Jessica, for whom wine is more than a job, it is their shared passion.Vineyards
The terroir of the estate's south-facing vineyards is composed of finely weathered Devonian slate. This slate has an almost "greasy" feel and constantly "expands" from below, making it an ideal home for Riesling vines, giving the wines an unmistakable Mosel minerality and grandeur. Notable locations include Brauneberger Juffer, a Grand Cru vineyard covering approximately 32 ha, and Juffer Sonnenuhr, a world-class site covering approximately 10.5 ha of steep slopes in the heart of the vineyard. It is warmer than Brauneberger Juffer and is the main parcel in Brauneberg. Its wines are deep and powerful, with complex fruit and tremendous spice, without sacrificing an ounce of grace.
Philosophy
Oliver Haag, with the Devonian slate beneath his feet, is at Juffer Sonnenuhr every day, working towards a critical moment: deciding when to start the harvest, an essential decision for producing excellent wine. In the winery, the must is turned into wine in stainless steel tanks, and it is here that Oliver guides the wine on its journey. Each year is different, reflecting the expression of the experience. The winery focuses on traditional winemaking, which makes their work more gentle, sustainable and selective.
