Buy Wine from Penfolds
Penfolds is an iconic winery that has been producing remarkable wines since 1844. Its success has been driven by generations of visionaries and innovators. From its beginnings to the present day, the fusion of science, art and innovation has led Penfolds to be one of Australia's most famous and respected wineries.
History
The Penfolds story began in 1844 when, following the success of the first sherries and fortified wines, founders Dr Christopher and Mary Penfolds planted vine cuttings they had taken on their voyage to Australia. In that year, the fledgling vineyard was officially established as the Penfolds wine company at Magill Estate. As the company grew, so did Dr Penfold's medical reputation, leaving much of the management of the winery to Mary Penfold. After Christopher's death in 1870, Mary assumed full responsibility for the winery, marking years of determination and effort. By 1907, Penfolds had become the largest winery in South Australia.
In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first chief winemaker, taking Penfolds to the world stage with his experimentation with long-aged wines, culminating in the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s.
Vineyards
The magic of Penfolds begins in the vineyard. Vineyard site selection and fruit quality have always underpinned Penfolds' reputation. Over almost 180 years of history, Penfolds has owned and leased some of the finest vineyard sites in Australia and around the world. Its wine regions span both the northern and southern hemispheres. Each country brings something new to the Penfolds portfolio, while maintaining the style and winemaking philosophy that Penfolds has proudly championed since 1844.
In Australia, Penfolds vineyards are located on prime land in the best wine regions, including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Henty and Tasmania. They also work with carefully selected growers to maintain their philosophy of going where the fruit grows best.
Philosophy
Penfolds' winemaking philosophy is not to be limited by country, vineyard or time. Since its inception, the winery has been a pioneer in experimentation and innovation. Mary Penfold, for example, insisted that the grapes be blended according to her own taste, and everything she knew about wine, she learned herself. This tradition of experimentation and dedication to quality has continued over the years, and is evident in the variety and excellence of the wines Penfolds produces today.
