Buy Wine from Marimar Estate
Located in the rolling hills of western Sonoma County, in the Russian River/Green Valley appellation, is the Marimar Estate Winery. This region, just 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 50 miles north of San Francisco, is a perfect microclimate for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The proximity to the sea and the influence of its breezes and fogs are the reasons why Marimar Torres chose this privileged location to "export" the Torres family's legacy of fine wines to California. Marimar Torres arrived in California in 1975 and, after two years of searching, acquired the land and began planting the vineyard in 1986. Today, the Don Miguel vineyard, named after the family patriarch, has 12 hectares planted with Chardonnay and 12 hectares with Pinot Noir. The wines are made entirely from grapes grown on the estate.Vineyards
The Don Miguel vineyard is unique in California due to its all-Poundpean style. The vines are grown very close to the ground on an open vertical vine training, following the slope of an east-facing hillside. The planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, four times more than is traditional in California. This high density promotes root competition and reduces vigour, naturally decreasing production per vine. The result is grapes with more concentrated flavours, more refined and elegant aromas, and better balance. To add complexity, Marimar conducted extensive research to select several clones of each variety.
Philosophy
Marimar Estate prides itself on its commitment to sustainability. In 2017, they earned their sustainability certification, reflecting their commitment to the community and future generations. The winery and estate homes are 100% solar powered. Waste is recycled and compost is used to fertilise the vineyard. In addition, chickens are kept to increase biodiversity and owl boxes are placed in the vineyard to control the rodent population. There is also an emphasis on biodiversity and ecology, moving away from the monoculture of the vineyard and creating a thriving ecosystem.
As for the team behind Marimar Estate, Marimar Torres has been involved in the wine business all her life. Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1945, she has been a key figure in promoting Torres wines in Spain and North America. Cristina Torres, born in 1988, is the only daughter of Marimar Torres and represents the fifth generation of the Torres family. After gaining experience outside the family business, she joined the company in 2020 and is now the General Manager. Cristina has inherited her love for the vineyard from her family and has worked alongside her mother all her life.
