The Azienda Agricola Serragghia is located in Pantelleria, a small volcanic island situated between Sicily and Tunisia. This winery has a fascinating history, starting with its founder, Gabrio Bini, who in his former life was an architect in Milan. In 1993, Gabrio, together with his wife Genevieve, visited Pantelleria for the first time and were so enamoured with the place that they decided to buy a plot of land there. This land would not only house vines, but also a hectare of caper bushes.
Initially, Bini focused on capers, experimenting with different types of salt for preservation and selling the grapes he produced. However, after discovering natural wines and being captivated by the style of Pierre Overnoy, Gabrio decided he wanted to produce that type of wine. Thus was born Azienda Agricola Serragghia in the village of Scauri.Vineyards
The Serragghia vineyards cover a total of seven hectares. Some of these lands are flat, while others are on terraces reaching altitudes of up to 500 metres above sea level. The grape varieties grown include Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria), Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Catarrato, Pignatello, Pinot Noir and Savagnin. Some of these vines are an impressive 80 years old. The soil in which they grow is predominantly volcanic, with the presence of gneiss, obsidian (a type of volcanic glass) and clay.
Philosophy
Serragghia's winemaking philosophy focuses on natural and organic production. Gabrio Bini uses horses to plough the vineyards and follows organic and biodynamic practices, with Demeter and AAA certifications. Fermentation of the must is done in buried Spanish amphorae and, in a unique twist, Gabrio does not use sulphur in the process. Instead, he adds three obsidian stones to each amphora, a tradition that, according to ancient beliefs, brings good luck. Annual production varies between 5,000 and 15,000 bottles, and the resulting wines are described as wild, beautiful and expansive, reflecting the very essence of Pantelleria and Gabrio himself.
