Buy Wine from Clos Kixhaya
Clos Kixhaya is located in Chinon, in the Loire Valley. This winery covers a 4.5 hectare walled vineyard in Chinon, composed entirely of Cabernet Franc vines between 55 and 90 years old.
History
In 2018, Beátriz Papamija and her husband Étienne Le Blanc took over the vineyard, winery and attached farm, transforming a semi-abandoned property into a working winery and farm. Their first vintage was in 2020, and since then, the couple have worked tirelessly to produce delicious, additive-free, natural wines in both the vineyard and the winery. Beatriz and Étienne are the new generation of winemakers in the central Loire Valley who respect the terroir of their adopted region, with a passion born of respect for the land and the creation of wines that reflect its bounty.
Beatriz, originally from Colombia, and Étienne, born near Calais, met in Spain. After living in different cities and having two children, they were attracted by wine, in particular natural wine. They decided to move to the Loire in 2016, where Beátriz studied viticulture and oenology at the Edgar Pisani agricultural school near Saumur. During their search for vineyards, they found 4 hectares of old vines in Chinon, with a house and a cellar right next door, in 2019.
Vineyards
The Clos Kixhaya vineyard extends over 4.5 hectares on the south bank of the river in Chinon. The vines have an average age of 55 years, with the oldest being over 90 years old. These Cabernet Franc vines grow in a soil called Varennes Graveleuses, which is sandy and rocky with a clay subsoil, originating from the Vienne River. Since Beatrice and Étienne took over, they have limited the working of the soil to encourage biodiversity in the vines, following biodynamic principles.
Philosophy
Beatrice and Étienne's philosophy is based on sustainability and working primarily with what their farm provides. This means a line of wines composed entirely of Cabernet Franc. But this does not mean that they only produce red wine. In addition to two classic red Cabernet Franc bottlings, they also produce a direct press white wine, Blanc des Noirs, as well as a delicious and lively natural petillant rosé. The couple has also started a local cooperative for biodynamically minded winegrowers in Chinon and Touraine, sharing the biodynamic work and preparations for their vineyards.
When it comes to winemaking, Beatrice and Étienne maintain a gentle and as natural approach as possible. Movements are made by gravity, they prefer to keep extractions low, but are not afraid to experiment with long macerations. The wines age in small old barrels or stainless steel tanks, and in 2022 they will welcome a couple of custom-made concrete tanks in the cellar.
