Buy Wine from Frontio
At Bodega Frontio, natural wines are made with as little intervention as possible. It is located in Fermoselle, Zamora, specifically in Arribes del Duero, Spain and was founded in 2016 by Danish wine producer Thyge Benned, better known as Chus.
This happened after he decided to quit his job as a natural gas trader at Maersk Oil, Copenhagen and bought vineyards in the aforementioned area.
Reclaimed vineyards
These vineyards are between 10 and 100 years old, and have a long tradition of winemaking. However, due to the low yields and difficult accessibility of the old vines, many were abandoned, but Thyge wanted to reclaim them and make the most of them.
For the recovery of these vineyards, work is done by hand. The hummus is restored thanks to cover crops and compost, and the crushed branches are left on the vineyard in which different varieties of indigenous grapes are grown.
In this winery, wines are made from native grapes grown organically, respecting the natural cycles and the soil, without the use of herbicides or chemicals.
The local Juan García grape, one of the main grapes grown in this area, is a non-typical Spanish grape whose skin is quite thin and is low in alcohol.
The grapes are hand-picked and processed in a granite winery that dates back some 500 years. The wines are then made with whole bunches and minimal intervention.
Thyge makes most of his wines from grapes he grows himself in his own vineyards, but he also buys grapes from other winegrowers in the area, who like him, work according to organic principles.
His wines are micro vinifications, which means that he uses a lot of small format tanks. He also uses a large number of open barrels, as well as synthetic lagares.
Fermentations are carried out with unstemmed bunches and without cooling equipment. The grapes are gently pressed with a pneumatic press and then go into the barrels where they can last several months until the harvest, which is usually quite early and manual, which is typical in this area, where many winegrowers also sell their grapes to other producers in the area.
The result is organic, mineral wines with a fresh style. They are natural, handmade organic wines, where the quality of the grapes and the soil where they are grown are clearly perceived. They are recovery wines with fruity notes, quite full of nuances.
Getting to know Bodega Fontio's spaces
The Fontio Winery is divided into two large spaces. The first one we will mention is located in the underground area and it is the ageing room, which is compartmentalised with concrete walls. At street level, we find the production area, which consists of an open-plan hall with a wooden gabled roof.
On the other hand, we find the interior floor whose walls function as the foundation of the house. There are solar panels on the property, which contribute to the energy sustainability of the winery.
In the lower area, between the concrete walls, there are oak barrels on two levels, Grenier foudres, a clay sphere and several bottle crates.
The wines produced in these spaces denote all the passion and effort that their creator puts into each stage of the process. It is enough to taste them to understand that Thyge made the best decision of his life, leaving behind his previous job to pursue his dreams. As his next goal, Chus intends to complete a range of wines with at least one single varietal of each of the grapes native to the area where the winery is located.
