Buy Wine from De Sousa
The De Sousa winery, located in the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs, is a jewel of French viticulture with a rich and fascinating history. Founded before 1890, this family winery has witnessed the evolution of viticulture in the Champagne region. Its history is marked by the arrival of Manuel, the paternal grandfather of Portuguese origin, in Avize, a village marked by the horrors of the First World War. Manuel's death in 1929 from combat fumes and his widow's struggle to support the family in a turbulent world are an integral part of the winery's history.
Vineyards
De Sousa' s vineyards extend over 9.5 hectares, spread over 42 plots, in terroirs classified as Grands Crus in places such as Avize, Cramant, Oger and Mesnil/Oger. The soil, composed entirely of chalk, provides an ideal base for growing Chardonnay (60%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (10%) grape varieties. These vines, with an average age of 45 years and a planting density of 8,000 plants per hectare, benefit from a climate and a south-southeast orientation that guarantee maximum sunshine. The depth of the roots, which can reach 25 to 30 metres, allows the vines to extract essential nutrients from the subsoil, which is reflected in the quality and character of the wines.
Philosophy
De Sousa' s winemaking philosophy is centred on respect for terroir and authenticity. Since the 1995 vintage, the winery has adopted winemaking practices that highlight the quality of its old vines, which are over 50 years old. Vinification is carried out in small oak barrels, which adds volume, roundness and unctuousness to the wines. The winery has also adopted biodynamic practices, with Organic Farming certifications since 2010 and Demeter since 2013.
The winery, led by Erick De Sousa, a master winemaker with a clear vision, strives to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. This is achieved through the use of indigenous yeasts and fermentation in enamelled steel tanks and barrels. The cellar, dug in champagne chalk, provides a perfect environment for the slow and steady ageing of the base wines, which are made exclusively by hand.
