The Rioja Alta, S.A. winery is one of the historic wineries of La Rioja. It was founded in 1890 as Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta. Its foundation is attributed to five families from La Rioja and the Basque Country. These families based their project on five pillars: quality, elegance, innovation, feeling and evolution.
La Rioja Alta Winery
The Bodega La Rioja Alta S.A. is located in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro. It is a century-old winery and its walls are steeped in the tradition of the classic Rioja winemakers. It is an ideal place for resting and ageing. You can still find this winery there, although it has grown over time.
This winery has created unique and original brands such as Viña Ardanza, Viña Arana, Viña Alberdi, Gran Reserva 890 and Gran Reserva 904.
However, since 1996, the Labastida winery has been in operation. This facility was built in the municipality of Labastida and has been equipped with the latest technology. It is a modern infrastructure that guarantees a perfect fermentation process.
Currently, the La Rioja Alta Group is made up of 4 wineries in La Rioja Alta and Torre de Oña; Lagar de Cervera, in Rías Baixas; and Áster, in Ribera del Duero.
Vineyards
With regard to vineyards, Bodega La Rioja Alta, S.A. has its own plots of land totalling more than 473 hectares, of which 360 hectares correspond to vineyards mainly located on the best land in the sub-region of La Rioja Alta.
These vineyards are home to Spain's great red grape, Tempranillo, the vigorous Garnacha, Graciano (to give personality to the wines), and Mazuelo. These are native grapes to give their wines the unmistakable personality of the classic Rioja.
The vineyards are planted on calcareous soils of La Rioja Alta: Rodezno, Labastida, Briones. However, for the Garnacha variety, there are also 63 hectares in the municipality of Tudelilla, in La Rioja Oriental.
Almost all of these vines are planted on trellises and the remaining 20% are goblet-trained; this is essential for the quality of the wine.
