In the heart of the Marche region of Italy is Villa Bucci, an iconic winery located in the hills of Ostra Vetere , in the province of Ancona. This area, known as Castelli di Jesi, is about 20 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea and is characterised by its rolling landscape and its proximity to the historic city of Urbino, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
The soul behind Villa Bucci is Ampelio Bucci, who, together with the renowned winemaker Giorgio Grai, has revolutionised the Italian winemaking tradition by producing white wines with exceptional structure and remarkable ageing capacity.
Vineyards
The Villa Bucci estate covers approximately 400 hectares, of which 31 hectares are dedicated to vine growing. Of these, 25 hectares are in the Castelli di Jesi DOC area, renowned for its strict regulations guaranteeing the quality of the wine and for the distinctive qualities of Verdicchio, which stands out for its freshness, minerality and ageing capacity, and are planted with Verdicchio, while the remaining 6 hectares are given over to red varieties such as Montepulciano and Sangiovese, used to produce the Rosso Piceno DOC.
The vineyards are distributed in six plots with different orientations and altitudes, which allows for a greater complexity in the blends. The average age of the vineyard is 35 years, with some exceeding 50 years, which contributes to low yields and exceptional grape quality.
The Villa Bucci terroir is characterised by clay and limestone soils, which give body and elegance to the wines. The Mediterranean climate, influenced by the proximity to the Adriatic Sea, provides hot summers and mild winters, ideal conditions for growing grapes.
Since 2000, the winery practices certified organic agriculture, avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides, and using techniques such as sexual confusion for pest control. In addition, they use plant covers that favour biodiversity and maintain the vitality of the soil.
Philosophy
Villa Bucci' s philosophy focuses on the elegance, complexity and finesse of its wines, always seeking to reflect the authenticity of the terroir and the winemaking tradition of Le Marche. Ampelio Bucci, inspired by his admiration for the wines of Burgundy, has succeeded in imprinting on his wines a unique identity that combines the richness of Verdicchio with the subtlety and longevity characteristic of great white wines.
In the vineyard, Villa Bucci limits production to 2.9 tons per hectare, significantly below the 5.6 tons allowed by the AOC, thus ensuring greater concentration and quality in the grapes. They use Verdicchio clones selected from their own nursery, which allows them to maintain the consistency and authenticity of their wines.
Vinification is carried out in an underground cellar which, thanks to its design, does not require artificial refrigeration. They use large 50-year-old Slavonian oak barrels, with capacities of 35, 50 and 75 hectolitres, which allow the wines to evolve optimally, emphasising their bouquet without imposing dominant woody notes.
Each parcel is vinified separately, and then blends are made to express the complexity and richness of the Verdicchio. Villa Bucci' s white wines stand out for their structure, elegance and ageing ability, while its reds, such as Villa Bucci Rosso, are approachable, smooth and pleasurable from their youth.
Villa Bucci 's dedication to quality and authenticity has positioned its wines among the most renowned in Italy, with its Villa Bucci Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Riserva being an undisputed benchmark of Verdicchio, appreciated for its longevity, depth and elegance.
