Jean-François Ginglinger is a faithful contributor to the history of natural wine in Alsace (France), as is his father, Jean-Louis Ginglinger, and his family in general. He is a major producer of natural wines, based in the village of Pfaffenheim, 12 kilometres south of Colmar.
Jean-François Ginglinger's vineyards
This winegrower is in charge of 6.5 hectares of fantastic sites. There is a particular mix of limestone soils, including several types of limestone, including calcareous sandstone. His family, no amateurs by any means, have been involved in viticulture since 1610. In addition, he has two plots in the Grand Cru vineyards of Steinert and Zinnkoepfle. His father started the domain of the winery around 1960. All visionaries in viticulture, they converted to biodynamics in 1997, although it was not until 2001 that they achieved their official certification with Demeter. They also received Ecocert organic certification in 1999. His son, Jean-François, has been able to follow in his father's footsteps, respecting his values along the way and vastly improving on them. In recent years, he has abandoned mechanised vehicles to return to working with horses in his vineyards.
Wines of Jean Ginglinger
Ginglinger is a passionate, quiet and humble man with a clear goal in mind: to produce pure wines that convey the unique terroir flavour of his vineyards. He produces wines from the seven standard white grape varieties of Alsace: Sylvaner, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, as well as Pinot Noir. All the wines have no added sulphites. He also makes an excellent Cremant d'Alsace with Auxerrois Blanc and Pinot Blanc. This chief of white grapes knows how to move between extremes. Among his most outstanding bottles are Ginglinger Riesling 2018, Ginglinger Pinot Blanc 2018, Ginglinger Pinot Gris 2018 and Ginglinger Riesling Réserve 2017.
