The Oremus winery is located in the heart of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region, a mountain range that occupies the north-eastern part of Hungary. This region is renowned for its exceptional wine-growing conditions, which earned it the title of World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2002. In the geographical centre of this region are the town of Tolcsva and the Oremus Winery.
History
The history of the Oremus Winery is deeply rooted in the winemaking tradition of the region. In 1993, shortly after the fall of communism, the Álvarez Vega Sicilia family founded Tokaj-Oremus Vineyards and Winery. The estate's activities are centred in Tolcsva, where, in 1999, a modern winemaking cellar was built, connected to the labyrinth of underground cellars dating back to the 13th century. The Álvarez family, in embarking on this project, showed a deep respect for the winemaking tradition of the region, devoting time and effort to the careful study of the wine and its production process. To manage the project, they recruited a professional team that knew the terroir very well and sought an experienced winemaker from the area to lead the team.
Vineyards
The Tokaj region is famous for its unique terroir. The town of Tokaj, which gives its name to the wines produced in the region, is located on the banks of the Bodrog River at the foot of the Zemplén Mountains, close to the borders with today's Independent Republic of Ukraine. The Tokaj region covers a total of 7,000 hectares of vineyards and consists of 27 municipalities. The geographical location and climate of the region, together with the type of soil, create ideal conditions for the production of high quality wines.
Philosophy
The philosophy behind Oremus wines is to convey the delicacy of a wine fit for kings. This idea is reflected in Louis XIV's description when he tasted it:"Tokaj, wine of kings and king of wines". The history of Oremus wines dates back to 1630, when Maté Szepsi Lacko, a Calvinist preacher, made the first "Tokaj tear wine" (Tokaj Aszú) and offered it to Princess Susana Lorántffy. This wine was produced from grapes grown in the Oremus vineyard. Since then, the Oremus vineyard has been recognised for its excellence, being classified as primae classis in 1772, in the world's first classification of vineyards.
