The winery starts with old vines and careful work in the cellar to produce wines with a great concentration of aromas and great elegance, wines rooted in the Ribera de Duero!
History
Bodegas Vizcarra is located in Mambrilla de Castrejón (Burgos) and produces its red wines under the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.
The winery was founded in the 1980s by José Manuel Vizcarra Aguado, who planted the first vineyards in Ribera de Duero at a time when no one was yet committed to the area. José Manuel Vizcarra was one of the first in the 1980s to plant and cultivate vineyards in Ribera.
However, it was in the 1990s when his son Juan Carlos Vizcarra followed in his father's footsteps, first making young wines and later aged wines.
In 1991, the history of Bodegas Vizcarra began with Juan Carlos Vizcarra, the current owner and oenologist.
Its beginnings...
The actual foundation of the winery was in 1991, in Mambrilla de Castrejón (Burgos). It began with Juan Carlos Vizcaya, a young winegrower who, at the end of his oenology studies, received his father's old vines to make his first wines in the garage of his house.
From there, Juan Carlos started to make wines in rudimentary facilities, producing wines in the family tradition that have been polished to compete in the high end of the range.
In 1998, the winery's first reserve wine was launched on the market. That wine called "Selección de Nuestras Viñas" was later replaced by the current Vizcarra Torralvo.
In 2007 the new facilities were inaugurated in which all the processes are carried out by gravity, avoiding the use of pumps.
With this system, the final product is respected to the maximum, achieving wines that stand out for their elegance and personality.
Vineyards
Bodegas Vizcarra owns 50 hectares of vineyards in the districts, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, cultivated with tinto fino (tempranillo) and a small proportion of international grapes.
The vineyards are located in the municipalities of Mambrilla de Castrejón and Roa de Duero. With these vineyards, the owner Juan Carlos Vizcarra makes young wines and wines for ageing.
These vineyards are located in the so-called "Heart of the Ribera del Duero", cultivated in goblet and trellis formation, and are the pillar to always obtain wines with their own characteristics that are faithful to the terroir.
Use of traditional viticulture techniques
Bodegas Vizcarra also stands out for its work in the field, with a traditional and perfectionist viticulture, where Juan Carlos Vizcarra, the winery's oenologist, investigates and puts all his enthusiasm and interest in viticulture and oenology, achieving that his wines are recognised worldwide by the specialised critics.
And you, have you already tasted some of the impressive wines of this winery? Leave us your comments!
